How to say “I’m fine” in Spanish other than the classic “BIEN”

Estoy bien

Tired of not knowing other ways to answer other than “bien” when people ask you how you are in Spanish? In today’s blog post, I’ll explain how to say “I’m fine” in Spanish like a true local so you have other alternatives to the simple “bien”. Keep reading!

Ahí vamos.

This literally means “there we go”, although it can’t be translated literally, because in English this phrase is used to encourage others. Here’s an example of how it’s used in English: let’s say you’re jogging and trying to finish X kilometers in a certain amount of time and you manage to do it. In English, you’d say “there we go”. Conversely, if someone asked “how are you?” in English, no one would answer “there we go”.

No me quejo.

In this case, the literal translation would be “I don’t complain”. We use this expression to say that “we can’t complain” because life is going pretty well in general. So, if life’s treating you alright, this is the expression for you!

Bien, tirando.

This is one of weirdest ways to say I’m fine in Spanish if you stick to the literal meaning. What does it actually mean? “Pulling”. Yes, I’m serious! It would be like saying that we’re pulling our way through life with its moments of happiness and challenges.

tirando

You could picture this like someone pulling on something; however, it doesn’t have the connotation of difficulty, it would simply be something like we’re “hanging in there” or “pressing on” or “pushing forward”.

Aquí, trabajando.

In Spanish we use the construction “aquí (here) + the verb in a gerund form” depending on what we’re doing at the time. So, if you run into someone at the supermarket and they ask how you’re doing, you can say “aquí, comprando” (here, buying). On the other hand, if you’re in your room going over the contents of today’s lesson and your brother comes in and asks how you are, you can say “aquí, estudiando” (“here, studying”).

See? Now you have a wider range of ways to say I’m fine in Spanish besides the classic “bien” and can answer the way a local would in an informal situation. If you also want alternatives for “cómo estás” or “qué tal”, I recommend that you have a look at this article.

And if you’re hoping to speak real Spanish as spoken in the streets, think about hiring a Spanish teacher to teach you what can’t be found in a book.

Are you up for it?
